Cooking From the Heart: Meet Elisa Alvarez of El Corazón Cocina
Spend a few minutes with Elisa Alvarez and you'll notice two things right away: her food is delicious, and her spirit is calm. Both, she'll tell you, come from the same place.
A Love Passed Down
Elisa was born and raised in the Bronx, New York. Her love for food and for serving others runs deep in her culture, and she credits her grandmother, an amazing cook, for passing it down to her.
In 2007, Elisa and her family moved to Virginia in search of a better life and better schools for their six daughters. Once they settled in, she couldn't stay out of the kitchen for long. In 2008 she launched a catering and event business, handling everything from food to décor, with her daughters serving right alongside her. By 2015 she had opened a deli while continuing to cater.
A Season of Healing
In 2017, everything changed. Elisa was diagnosed with cancer and had to let the deli go.
"He was everything," she says of the Lord during that season. "I was hanging on the hem of His garment."
Elisa went through six months of treatment. In the fourth month, she says she was touched in her sleep in a way she had never experienced before, and she knew it was her healing. From that moment, she refused to be afraid. She claimed it. A scan soon confirmed she was cancer free, though she completed her treatment as planned.
Healing came with lessons, too. God showed her that it was okay to slow down, okay to put herself first, and that her purpose didn't end once her daughters were grown and building their own lives.
For years afterward, Elisa served in her church kitchen, cooking for events without pay. She wasn't sure the passion she once had for catering would ever come back. Then in 2024, a friend starting her own catering business asked Elisa to mentor her through some pop-up events at a local Latino market. Somewhere in the middle of helping her friend, Elisa felt it all return. This is it. I can do this. I want to do this.
On January 2, 2025, El Corazón Cocina was born. Elisa didn't build it alone. Her husband, Luis, is her best friend and her number one supporter. Through her battle with cancer, he cared for her and made sure their family had everything they needed. Today, the two of them get to work side by side through El Corazón Cocina, turning a season that once tested their family into a business they share.
My Heart Is the One That Cooks
The name, which means "The Heart Kitchen," says everything about how Elisa works. She doesn't cook by the book. She cooks with love and lets her heart guide her.
"My heart is the one that cooks," she says.
She admits she hesitated at first to give her business a fully Spanish name, worried people might struggle to pronounce it. In the end, she decided not to hide who she is. El Corazón Cocina reflects her heritage and her heart, and that is exactly what she wants her clients to taste.
A Prayer for a Dream Kitchen
In the early days, Elisa worked out of a kitchen that wasn't a commercial space. Getting enough hours to prep was a constant struggle, and cooking for events there was hard. So she prayed. "Lord, I need a dream kitchen."
God answered with a commercial kitchen at Westover Hills United Methodist Church. Its name? Dream Kitchen.
"I'm home," she remembers thinking. "I know You're in this."
Today Elisa caters weddings, quinceañeras, milestone celebrations, and corporate events. Her biggest event this year was a wedding for 350 guests with plated service, a first for a caterer used to buffets. Cooking for a crowd has never fazed her, but plating and serving that many guests took a team of about eight servers plus runners. She even recorded the service so she could watch it back afterward, and she laughs about how serious she got keeping everyone moving. They pulled it off.
She is quick to say she doesn't do it alone. Elisa regularly collaborates with other caterers, photographers, and small businesses, many of them fellow believers she has come to know through her church, New Life Outreach International. "Small businesses need to stick together," she says.
His Business, Not Hers
When Elisa learned about Needle's Eye Ministries, saying yes was easy.
"This is not my business. This is His business," she says. Since reopening, her constant prayer has been, Lord, use me for Your kingdom. After a decade of serving inside her church, she has come to see that ministry goes well beyond the four walls of a church building.
The Word That Carried Her
Elisa's anchor is Isaiah 55. Verses 8 and 9 remind her that God's thoughts and ways are higher than ours, and that even when we can't understand what He's doing, our limited view isn't the whole picture. There was a time she lost hope and didn't believe she would still be here. Today she is healthy, grateful, and full of joy because she sees life differently now.
She also holds tightly to Isaiah 55:11, which promises that God's word does not return empty but accomplishes the purpose for which He sends it. To Elisa, it's a reminder that His promises over her life are true.
Giving Back, One Class at a Time
Elisa's newest passion is teaching. Through El Corazón Cocina, she leads cooking classes, including through a contract with a local foster care organization, where she teaches young people how to cook and builds their restaurant skills. She also hosts themed gatherings for women, like an evening of painting followed by an elegant dinner, designed as a space where women who carry so much can set it down for a while, have fun, and connect with other Christian women. Classes and events are held at Dream Kitchen and its adjoining hall at Westover Hills UMC.
And she's working on something new: an e-book of her recipes, so more people can bring a little of her heart into their own kitchens.
You don't have to wait for the e-book to try Elisa's cooking. El Corazón Cocina is the lunch sponsor for our monthly lunches, Needle’s Eye Lunch Connect! Every month, our community gets to gather around a meal made with the same love, faith, and heart that carried Elisa through every season of her story. Come hungry, and be sure to say hello to Elisa while you're there.
