Staying Attentive to God in the Workday

Pressure Points: Staying Attentive to God in the Workday

At our latest Faith & Work lunch, we shared a meaningful conversation around five ways we can remain attentive to God’s presence and purpose in our workday.

The group reflected on:

1. Starting the day with God – anchoring our minds and hearts before the rush begins.

2. Creating space for divine interruptions – holding plans loosely so we can welcome holy disruptions.

3. Checking in regularly with Him – even a simple app reminder can help us realign.

4. Seeing people, not just tasks – just like Jesus did.

5. Ending the day with reflection – asking, How well did I follow God’s lead today?

While the last two practices are less common, they were affirmed as powerful and worth building into our rhythms.

We also opened Scripture together and talked about people who honored God’s presence/will while also respecting their employer.

Nehemiah paused to pray and sought his king’s blessing before leaving to rebuild Jerusalem.

Joseph remained faithful to God and showed integrity in his work, even in unjust situations.

Daniel respectfully declined the king’s food, proposed a better way, and continued to serve the king with excellence.

It was a reminder that attentiveness to God doesn’t mean stepping out of our work—it means stepping deeper into it… with Him.
