Business Spotlight · Marc Thompson & Sovereign Capital Vantage
A Family Building Wealth and Trust on Faith
This month, we're shining our spotlight on Marc Thompson, President of Sovereign Capital Vantage, a fee-only fiduciary wealth management firm he built alongside his wife Diana and daughter Emily, all three active members of the Needle's Eye community.
Finding His Way to Needle's Eye
Marc joined the Needle's Eye Board of Directors in the last year, but his connection to the community started simply: he came to a Faith @ Work Lunch, met Mike Patterson, and immediately loved the culture and heart of the place. He got involved quickly from there.
The timing meant more than it might seem on the surface. For about eight months before that, Marc had been serving on the board of a historical nonprofit organization in Mississippi, and he missed that kind of involvement once it ended. Looking back, he sees it as the Lord bringing him to Needle's Eye at exactly the right moment — a place where he could keep serving, keep connecting with other believers in the marketplace, and keep spreading the word about his business at the same time.
A Career Built on Coming Back
Marc's path into financial advising wasn't a straight line. After he and Diana married, his first job was with Farmers Insurance Group, and he spent a number of years in health insurance sales. At one point, he stepped away to try something unrelated — and hated it. That experience made clear what he already suspected: he needed to get back into the field he was made for. In 1996, he earned his financial licenses and never looked back.
Since then, Marc has led several investment-related companies across Missouri, Mississippi, and Tennessee, including serving as President, CEO, and Director of Heartland Associates, Inc., a diversified financial holding company that became the fastest-growing health insurance agency in Missouri under his leadership. Throughout it all, one verse has anchored him: 3 John 2 (KJV) — "Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers."
Building It as a Family
Sovereign Capital Vantage was always meant to be a family business. Marc and Diana founded it together; Diana helped get it off the ground before stepping away for a season to return to teaching, and eventually came back to the company to lead the regulatory side — the enormous amount of paperwork and compliance work that comes with running a highly regulated business. Today she serves as Executive Vice President.
Their daughter Emily, who now serves as Marketing VP, brings a genuine heart for serving people to her role. Whether she's connecting with clients or shaping how the firm shows up in the community, that same spirit of care is at the center of what she does.
For Marc, building something like this with his own family has been the dream — and it's taught him what real partnership looks like, day in and day out.
Stewardship as a Calling
As fiduciaries, Marc and his team operate under a simple, non-negotiable principle: it's the client's money, not theirs. Every decision starts there. Marc describes it as godly stewardship — a matter of faithfulness, not just professional obligation. That conviction is also why the firm stopped selling life insurance altogether: as commissioned products, they don't fit within a truly fiduciary relationship, and Marc wanted no daylight between what he believes and how he does business.
Sovereign Capital Vantage operates as a 100% fee-only advisory firm, putting that promise in writing: client interests first, full transparency on fees, no commissions, no kickbacks, and no conflicts of interest. It's a standard most people wish their financial advisor held — and one Marc has built his entire firm around.
A Reminder That God Wasn't Finished
A few years ago, Marc suffered a heart attack with a serious blockage. The nurse who cared for him in the ER saw him again the next day — and became emotional. She told him she honestly hadn't expected him to make it through the night. For Marc, it was a clear sign: God had more for his life.
That moment shapes how he runs his business today. Marc leads Sovereign Capital Vantage from a place of genuinely wanting to care for his clients and better their lives — even in small ways. It's part of why the firm keeps its account minimums far lower than many advisory firms typically require: Marc wants to be able to help people, not just the ones who already have the most.
