Ryan O’Rourke | Ironclad Coffee Roasters & Baking Co. : From an Irish Hobby to Richmond’s Own Ironclad Coffee
This month, we're shining our spotlight on Ryan O'Rourke, owner and founder of Ironclad Coffee Roasters & Baking Co., a faith-owned coffee roaster and café with locations across the Richmond area, and a story that starts a lot farther from home than you might expect.
Before Ironclad was ever a business, Ryan and his wife Kelly spent about five years in ministry, including 2011 to 2016 doing mission work on the coast of Ireland. It was there, about three and a half years into their work, that they realized shifting immigration laws might not allow them to stay much longer. As they began preparing to return to the U.S., Ryan discovered a new passion almost by accident: roasting coffee. What started as a hobby in Ireland, something he simply loved learning to do, planted the seed for what would eventually become Ironclad Coffee.
Richmond had been home to Ryan and Kelly before their time overseas, and they loved it enough to come back and build their business there.
Ryan went all in. Ironclad started by roasting for wholesale accounts- businesses, restaurants, hotels, offices, along with a bit of online retail. The roasting itself began in February 2016, with the business taking shape in the fall of 2015.
By 2018, Ironclad was ready to open a café to the public, launching its first café on E. Grace St. in Richmond that July. Three and a half years later, a second location followed in Richmond's West End at John Rolfe Parkway and Ridgefield Parkway, a walk-up spot that used to be an old Busters Ice Cream. In 2025, Ironclad expanded again, opening a location in Lynchburg.
Today, Ironclad roasts top-level, specialty-grade coffee sourced from around the world, Guatemala, Honduras, Brazil, Ethiopia, and more, bringing genuinely excellent beans to Richmond and beyond.
What sets Ironclad apart isn't just the coffee itself, it's the commitment to doing everything in house. Their signature seasonal menu features fun, creative flavors built around syrups and sauces made from scratch in their own kitchen, nothing off the shelf. The same goes for their bakery: every item is made fresh, by hand, from scratch, every single morning by their in-house team.
Ironclad's story isn't just about coffee, it's tied closely to Ryan and Kelly's family. In 2016, while they were in the thick of getting the business off the ground, friends who were missionaries on a small island in the Pacific were expecting and looking for a family to adopt their baby. Ryan and Kelly adopted him at birth, their son Titus, who is now nearly 10. Shortly after bringing Titus home, Kelly found out she was pregnant with their daughter. All of this unfolded right in the middle of launching Ironclad, a season of building a business and a family at the same time.
As a faith-owned business, Ironclad's mission goes beyond serving great coffee. Ryan is intentional about blessing his employees through the business, treating them well and making sure there's room to have fun along the way. That same spirit extends to customers: showing kindness, grace, and love through service, and creating an experience that's comfortable and genuinely enjoyable, a small, beautiful moment in someone's day.
You can find Ironclad Coffee roasting and serving craft-roasted specialty coffee across Richmond, Virginia and now Lynchburg. Learn more, shop their coffee, or find a café near you at ironcladcoffee.com.
